Mr. Henry Berry Martin, 91, beloved husband of the late Beth Harries Martin, entered into rest on Friday, Aug. 13, 2010, at Maple Ridge Nursing Home in Cartersville.

A memorial celebration will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 18, at Peeples Valley Baptist Church in Cartersville.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21, at Platt's Crawford Avenue Chapel in Augusta with Dr. John Oliver officiating. Interment to follow at Westover Memorial Park.

Mr. Martin was born to Augustus Isaac Martin and Margarette Crosby Martin in Ruffin, S.C., on Sept. 7, 1918. He was the youngest of eight children and from the age of 6 to 18 Henry lived at Epworth Methodist Orphanage in Columbia, S.C. Henry attended Augusta College in Augusta, where he met his beloved wife of 66 years, Beth Harries Martin.

Mr. Martin served his nation proudly in the United States Navy during World War II. He also worked for the YMCA in Augusta, owned and operated Fair Jopling Appliance Store, worked for Gulf Life Insurance, and worked at Westminster Schools of Augusta. At the First Presbyterian Church in Augusta, Henry served as Sunday School Superintendent and Elder. He also oversaw and helped build the church's site at Clarks Hill and was the caretaker of the site for many years. Henry and wife Beth established the Men's Prayer Breakfast at First Presbyterian Church and faithfully cooked and served breakfast to the men of the Augusta area for many years. He also helped establish Cliffwood Presbyterian Church. In later years Henry and his wife became members of Christ Church, Presbyterian and he served as Elder Emeritus. Henry Martin dearly loved his Lord Jesus Christ, his beloved wife Beth, his family and friends. A loving Christian family man, businessman, neighbor, and friend he touched the hearts of all who met him during his 91-plus years.

Mr. Martin is survived by his son, Col. Eugene Charles Martin and wife Lorna Hosea of Canton; his two daughters, Margarette Roberts and husband John T. of Okatie, S.C., and Carol Herron and husband Alvin of Cartersville; his 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his son, Stanley H. Martin.

Pallbearers will be Mr. Martin's grandsons.
