Mr. Moates was born on March 17, 1930, in Polk County, son of the late Monroe Dock Moates and the late Delia Gober Moates. He retired from Sweetwater Paperboard of Austell as a fork lift operator. Mr. Moates was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean conflict. He was preceded in death by his wives, Mrs. Martha Virginia Sorrells Moates and Mrs. Gladys Skates Moates; a son, Danny "Daniel" Moates; three sisters, Mrs. Melissa Holland, Mrs. Mary Alice Hall and Mrs. Martha Ann Moore; and five brothers, Mr. Hugh Moates, Mr. Mack Moates Sr., Mr. Bud Moates, Mr. Robert Moates and Mr. Harvey Moates.
Survivors include a daughter, Nell Skates Eaves and husband Vernon of Douglasville; five sons, Elden Moates and wife Wanda of Blue Ridge, Bruce Moates and wife Jennifer of Cartersville, Chad Moates and wife Nora of Dallas, Rodney Moates and wife Carol of Dallas, and David Skates and wife Kathy of Rome; a sister, Margie Cramer of Ohio; and two brothers, Raidon Monroe Moates and Eugene Franklin Moates, both of Aragon. Fourteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral, graveside and interment services for Mr. Moates will be held today at 5 p.m. in the family lot of Rose Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Anthony Osborne officiating and with personal remarks by family members.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today between 3 and 4:30 p.m.
