Their 8-0 loss sends the Lady Eagles back to the diamond today at 6 p.m. to play the winner of the Bowdon-North Cobb game, with the winner seizing the region's number two seed as well as an opportunity to play Gordon Lee again today, possibly twice.
Gordon Lee's Brenna Nations handcuffed Excel's hitters as she gave up no hits and no runs while walking three and striking out 11.
Excel threatened early, however, as Janna Scheff coaxed a walk out of Nations in the first inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Abby Hibbard. Kay Sullins walked and the Lady Eagles had runners on first and second with one out.
Nations then struck out two batters to end the threat. Gordon Lee scored six runs in the fifth.
Scheff pitched five innings, allowed eight hits, eight runs (four earned), walked three, hit one batter and registered four strikeouts.
Excel's three losses this season have all been to Gordon Lee.
