Jose Reyes of Marietta was participating in a church trip at Cherokee Retreat Center off Wilderness Camp Road in White when his canoe capsized. He could not swim and was not wearing a life jacket.
Witnesses did not know how long Reyes had been in the water. Shortly after 10 a.m., the group spotted Reyes and the overturned canoe and a man jumped in and retrieved the teen.
A boater transported Reyes to Park Marina where EMS crews performed CPR, but those efforts were unsuccessful.
