Cartersville Middle's football team remained unbeaten Saturday and, more importantly, moved on to the second round of the playoffs with a 39-0 rout of Ashworth.

The Purple Hurricanes scored two first-quarter touchdowns on Malik Riddick's 61-yard run and Tiamon Pennymon's 47-yard punt return and probably could have led 28-0 if not for a couple of penalties.

Cartersville had a 57-yard punt return by Kalin Heath and a 48-yard run by Pennymon called back because of penalties.

The Canes took a two-score lead into halftime.

When play resumed for the second half, Cartersville exploded for 19 third-quarter points, on Heath's 7-yard run, Trevor Carlton's 37-yard fumble return and Jahir Camps' 12-yard run, which was set up by Mason Heath's 32-yard interception return.

Camps added a 28-yard TD run in the fourth quarter to give the Canes a first-round playoff victory.

Cartersville (7-0) hosts Adairsville in the second round of the region playoffs Thursday at Weinman Stadium. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
